Before You Release Music
Agree songwriter splits with all collaborators
Keep a written record of those splits
Register your songs with your Performing Rights Organisation (e.g. GEMA, PRS, ASCAP)
Ensure every recording has an ISRC code
Ensure every composition has correct songwriter information attached
Keep track of who owns the master recording
Keep track of who owns the publishing rights
If You Perform Live
Submit setlists where applicable
Ensure your performing rights organisation has your latest repertoire information
Keep records of performances, dates and venues
If You Are a Recording Artist or Musician
Register with your neighbouring rights organisation (e.g. GVL, PPL)
Register all eligible recordings
Make sure performer credits are accurate
Ensure featured and non-featured performers are documented
If You Release Music Independently
Choose a distributor that suits your goals and budget
Check that metadata is accurate before delivery
Verify artist names, song titles and contributor information
Keep copies of royalty statements and reports
If You Run a Label
Have written agreements with artists
Clearly define ownership of masters
Track royalty obligations
Maintain accurate metadata and registration records
Review income streams regularly to identify missing revenue
Additional Revenue Opportunities
Explore sync licensing opportunities
Register for grant and funding programmes relevant to your region
Consider direct-to-fan sales through Bandcamp, your website and live shows
Review physical formats (vinyl, CDs, cassettes) where appropriate
Annual Rights Audit
At least once per year, ask yourself:
Are all my songs registered?
Are all my recordings registered?
Are my splits documented?
Am I receiving royalties from every source I should be?
Have I checked for unclaimed income?
Do I understand who controls each of my rights?
